29: Hostile and Negotiations

The Silencer stood with her arms crossed as she observed the pair standing on the wall—the dark-skinned man with two blades who had put up a decent fight and the woman who always wore a blue coat and carried a pistol like she could do something with it. As soon as she had made herself known, the man had drawn out his two swords and the woman had pulled her pistol from its holster and pointed it right at her.

The Silencer wasn’t worried. This wasn’t any more challenging or difficult than she had faced before. At this juncture, she was simply curious.

“I told you to leave,” she said. “Why didn’t you heed my advice?”

“Mostly because we don’t do what we’re told,” the woman said.

The Silencer nodded. She didn’t need that part of their personalities explained. She’d already picked up on that on her own.

“We’re trying to find out about the plague,” Kel said. “We want to stop it—not worship it like the crazy people or burn the city to the ground like the other crazy people. We are not crazy people! We’re just trying to stop a plague.”

The Silencer shook her head. “You can’t stop it,” she said. “It cannot be stopped.”

Why did these adventurers have such a hard time understanding that? She had seen the effects of the plague. She had watched it consume entire cities. She had seen it drive people mad with boils and fever. She knew there was no way to end it completely. Why couldn’t these adventurers see that as well?

“I think you’ll need to find a way out of the city before the goblins come,” the Silencer said. “They’re trying to encircle us now. There’ll be no escape once they do.”

“Look,” the man said, “I’m Kel. This is Christina. We’re just trying to understand why the plague consumes everything in its path, why it turns people into zombies, and why it keeps popping up no matter where we go. One of our friends can heal it. Make it disappear. Gone! She’s working on a potion right now to help with that. It seems like you’re the one defending the plague.”

The Silencer took her vicious-looking blade from her belt and pointed it right at Kel. “I am no ally of the plague.”

“Well, then, quit acting like it!” Christina shouted. “You sure say a lot of things that make you sound just like the howlers. ‘Oh, the plague’s so big and bad, you can never do anything about it.’ It sounds like you’re trying to convince us to worship the disease as well!”

The Silencer shook her head and chuckled softly. “You have no idea what you’re dealing with,” she said, “no idea what powers are at work here in Galin. The plague is only one of them. There are others that will overwhelm the continent. We’re all just pieces in a game, and I’m trying to survive through it. I suggest you start doing the same.”

“Surviving is what I do,” Christina said.

The woman held her gun a little straighter as she pointed it directly at the Silencer’s head.
